# Treasure Islands![[PR-ISLAND_02.jpg]] ## About Treasure Islands In May 2009, I collaborated on **Treasure Islands**, an interactive installation developed during the week-long Sense/Stage workshop at Concordia University’s Hexagram Blackbox. Working with Sarah Albu and Matti Niinimäki, we created a surreal audiovisual environment that combined body tracking, floor pressure sensors, and real-time animations to explore digital interaction. Utilizing Sense/Stage technology, the setup integrated custom-built wireless sensors, a quadraphonic speaker system, and top-mounted projectors to create a fluid, immersive experience. Participants navigated four themed islands—Rotten Fruit, Fluffy Knitted, Mechanical, and Body Part—triggering unique audio and visual responses. Preceded by a performance, **Treasure Islands** invited visitors to engage directly with the dynamic, data-driven environment. I'm proud of what we achieved in 2009—it still feels innovative today. ![ ](https://youtu.be/DoPrqmD8Lnc) ## Technology **Hardware:** - SenseStage wireless sensor system (custom-built sensors with XBee modems) - Watec WAT 902H Camera with IR filter (top-mounted for body tracking) - IR LEDs mounted on performer’s hat for motion detection - Floor pressure sensors by Joseph Thibodeau - Epson Powerlite 600p Projector (top-mounted) - Motu Traveler audio interface - Mackie 1642-VLZ3 mixer - 4 Mackie active speakers - MacBook Pro computers **Software:** - Max/MSP: Sensor data processing, audio control, and interaction mapping - Supercollider: Data network management - Animata: Real-time animation control via OSC - Tbeta: Motion tracking with IR camera, integrated with Max via TUIO - Logic Pro: Real-time audio processing and vocal effects - QLab: Audio file triggering for performance introductions **Protocols & Externals:** - OSC (Open Sound Control) for data communication - SenseWorld DataNetwork for sensor data distribution - Digital Orchestra Toolbox for Max/MSP sensor management ## Credits Matthew Waddell Sarah Albu Matti Niinimäki ![[PR-ADVENTURE_01.jpg]]
