# DEEP WEBSITE ![[PR-DEEPWEB_07.jpg]] ## About DEEP WEBSITE **DEEP WEBSITE** is a multi-part project developed in collaboration with Craig Fahner that explores themes of privacy, surveillance, and digital identity through four interconnected experiences: a live performance, a private deep web browsing room, a customized VR experience, and a voyeuristic installation. Each component uses humor and innovative technology to engage the audience, challenging their perceptions of privacy and control in an increasingly digital world. ### DEEP WEBSITE Performance _15 Min Audiovisual Performance_ A man browses the dark web in search for a quick and easy way to get serious muscles. His quest leads him to a dark web marketplace where he finds an instant printable solution to his needs. He voyages deep in the depths of the dark web and encounters more than he bargained for. ![[PR -DEEP_01.jpg]] ### DEEPLY PRIVATE browsing room _Installation_ A desktop workstation sits alone in the center of a room. Every surface including the desk and chair is lined with aluminum foil, creating a mirrored surface that forms a Faraday cage, blocking most electromagnetic radiation and giving the sense of a “bubble of privacy.” Visitors are invited to step inside, close the door, and interact with the computer. It operates using a USB-based system called [TAILS](https://tails.net/)—a privacy-focused operating system that leaves no trace and routes all traffic through the TOR network. Through this secure interface, visitors can explore the TOR browser, which provides access to various links on the "deep web". The installation aims to offer an opportunity to experience computers and the internet in a privacy-conscious way, free from the usual surveillance and data tracking. The aluminum foil lining, a playful nod to the stereotypical "tin foil hat," humorously references the lengths people might go to protect their privacy. This environment provides a glimpse into a hidden side of the internet, where conventional rules are blurred, and privacy and anonymity are paramount. ![[PR - Deep_02.jpg]] ### DEEP SOLUTIONS _Custom VR experience_ Visitors are invited to voluntarily download and forfeit a portion of their Facebook personal data during a brief consultation with one of our DEEP advisors. This data—containing location history, friend connections, and advertising profile information—is then processed through our private system, which transforms it into a customized VR experience. Participants navigate an increasingly twisted virtual landscape where they encounter 360-degree views of their most visited locations (often their own homes), absurdly generated ads based on their personal ad keywords, and shadowy demons with the names of previous removed friends. This piece visualizes the extent of personal data harvested by Facebook, while simultaneously presenting a humorous critique on privacy and data exploitation. _Do you trust us with your data more than you trust Facebook?_ ![[PR-DEEPWEB_05.jpg]] ### DEEP Voyeurism _Installation_ A toilet sits in the center of a room surrounded by six screens displaying footage from voyeur cams. Faces on the screens stare directly at you—they want to be watched just as much as they’re watching you. ![[PR-DEEPWEB_02.jpg]] ## Exhibition History 2017 Emmedia Particle + Wave 2017 Sled Island Festival 2018 Wreck City Residency ## Media ### Installation Documentation ![ ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boiUGfOhp2w) ### Performance Trailer [Watch here](https://player.vimeo.com/video/257195058) ## Other [Calgary Herald interview about Deep Solutions exhibition at Wreck City 2018](https://calgaryherald.com/entertainment/local-arts/wreck-city-residency-explores-how-we-live-with-interactive-exhibits-throughout-the-city) [WRECK CITY 2018 Documentary](https://youtu.be/nAkUzKbZZHU?t=744) --- ## Related Topics ### Tags #Ethics #Collaboration ### Notes [[Critique of Social Media]] [[Critique of Technological Progress]] ### Projects [[Website/Projects/DEEP DIVE|DEEP DIVE]] [[DEEP SOLUTIONS]]
